Understanding Gestational Diabetes
What is Gestational Diabetes?
Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy, typically between weeks 24-28. It occurs when your body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased demands of pregnancy, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels.
Key Facts:
- Usually develops in the second or third trimester
- Often has no noticeable symptoms
- Is typically diagnosed through routine screening
- Usually resolves after delivery
- Can be successfully managed with proper care
Why It Happens: During pregnancy, your placenta produces hormones that help your baby develop. These hormones also make your cells more resistant to insulin. For most pregnant women, the pancreas produces enough extra insulin to overcome this resistance. When it can't, blood sugar levels rise, resulting in gestational diabetes.
Risks if Left Unmanaged
For Your Baby:
- Excessive birth weight (macrosomia) leading to difficult delivery
- Premature birth
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) after birth
- Breathing difficulties
- Increased risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes later in life
- Stillbirth (rare, but risk increases if unmanaged)
For You:
- High blood pressure and preeclampsia
- Increased likelihood of C-section delivery
- Future type 2 diabetes (50% risk within 10 years)
- Gestational diabetes in future pregnancies
- Cardiovascular disease risk
